BECOME A MEMBER OF ST. LAURENCE
Attendance at Sunday Mass does not automatically make you a member of a Parish. If
you want to become a member of St. Laurence Church, please call or stop by the Parish Office,
located at 565 Standish Street, we will get information from you and send/give you a registration
form.
UPDATING FAMILY INFORMATION
To ensure that you receive correspondence and information from St. Laurence please
keep us informed of changes affecting your family, (new telephone number, email or address
change). Please click to update your information.
MASS OFFERING
Masses can be celebrated for a specific intention. Intentions can be for a specific person
(living or dead), family, prayer request, etc. If you wish to have a Mass celebrated, please come
into the Parish Office for arrangements. The requested stipend is $10.00.
PRAYER LIST
There is a list published in the bulletin of people who have requested prayers for
themselves, their families or friends who are ill or recovering. We can add them to the prayer list
if these people have given permission to have their name listed. They will be on the list for one
month. If you would like them on the list longer please call us. To be added to the list, call the
Parish Office or send us an e-mail notice.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
If you or a loved one would like to receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick call
the Parish Office or speak with Father before or after the Masses. If you are having surgery, you
can be anointed before you enter the Hospital.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTER, LECTOR, USHER
If you would like to receive information to become a Eucharistic Minister, Lector
(reader) or Usher for Church please call the Parish Office. All training will be provided.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTER FOR THE HOSPITAL AND HOMEBOUND
The Catholic Parishes in Elgin each take a day to bring Communion to the patients at
Sherman Hospital. St. Laurence’s day is Friday. From time to time we have some homebound
parishioners who would like to receive communion even though they cannot get out of the
house. It is a worthwhile ministry to bring communion to those confined to the Hospital or at
home. All training will be provided, please call the office.
NAMES OF MILITARY
If you would like to add a name of a person serving in the military to the list in the
bulletin please call us with their name, rank, and branch of service .
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN
Parents need to be registered members and should be faithful in attending Mass.
Participation in the baptismal preparation class is required. The Sacrament of Baptism is
celebrated on the 1st and 3rd weekends of the month during any of the Masses or after the
Saturday 4:00 pm or Sunday 10:15 am Masses. Please watch the Bulletin for the date of the
next preparation class or call the Parish Office. The classes are held 4 times a year and last
approximately 1 hour. Plan to attend a class during your pregnancy if possible.
BULLETIN ARTICLES
Articles for the bulletin must be submitted by Monday, Noon, before the Sunday you
wish them to appear. Articles submitted must be approved by the pastor and will be placed in
the bulletin according to needs and space available.
BECOMING CATHOLIC
If you are interested in becoming Catholic we have a process called the “Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults” (RCIA). These classes begin in September and conclude at the
Easter Vigil Mass. There are approximately 10 - 12 classes. The process encourages inquirers to
ask questions, learn about Christ and His teachings and the Church. Contact the Parish Office to
be put on the list for the next class. The class is open to those who were baptized but not
confirmed, those baptized in another faith or those who have never been baptized.
WEDDINGS
The Sacrament of Marriage requires a preparation period which begins with the couple
contacting the Parish Office at least six months before the wedding date. At least one person or
their parents needs to be a member of St. Laurence Church. The minimum age to have a wedding
is 19 years old. Couples need to meet with the Pastor and attend an Engaged Encounter
Weekend and an NFP (Natural Family Planning) Seminar through the Diocese.
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Confessions (reconciliations) are heard on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. The
sacrament may also be celebrated at other times by an appointment with the pastor.
